Meeting Recap

-- Where To Find Forms
-- Acquaintance Sheet Attached As PDF
-- History Timelines and Today In History
--,Local Genealogical Seminars

Thank you to those who were able to attend the Alumni Meeting Saturday, January 13, 2007 at the Redmond Regional Library.

Everyone enjoyed our guest speaker, Carol Pattison, a graduate of the 2001 UW program. For those of you who were unable to attend, you missed an extremely interesting lecture on “Organizing Your Family History For Better Research.”

The following is an outline of the areas Carol discussed.

Organizing For Better Research

1. In order to see what you already have, you need to organize.

-- No right or wrong way.
-- What makes sense to you?
-- Can anyone else understand it?

2. Various examples of organization:

-- Surname vs. event
-- Event – all papers related to an event (birth, death, etc.) filed together
-- Surname
-- Couple/Family
-- Family Line
-- Location
-- Record Type
-- Three Ring Binders
-- File cabinets/boxes
-- To number or not to number – that is the question

3. What you need in each file

-- Checklist
-- Family Group Sheets
-- Genealogy Report and/Pedigree Chart
-- Acquaintance Sheet (See Attached)
-- Time Chart (Timeline)
-- Copies of pictures
-- Personal information

4. More organizational tools

-- Research Log
-- Correspondence log for each surname
-- Research Plans
-- “To do” List

5. Office Supplies

-- Paper and note cards
-- Pens, pencils, highlighters (archival safe)
-- File folders in various colors
-- File hangers
-- A good magnifying glass
-- Pocket calculator
-- Stapler
-- Post-it notes
-- Maps
-- Labels & label maker (the label maker is nice but not essential)
-- Printer/copier

This is just a taste of Carol’s lecture. She gave us more tips and good information than can be listed here. It was a great lecture.

Thank you Carol!

Thank you to Janice Campbell Stout for assuming the duties of meeting coordinator. Jan did a fantastic job with the first meeting of the year and we look forward to more meetings of interest to the Association in the coming year.

Thank you to Dan Morgan for the use of his digital projector and for showing us his new iTalk recording accessory for the iPod.

Lisa Marker will gladly accept items for the door prize portion of the meeting. If you have something to contribute please see Lisa at the door prize table before the meeting.

We have also added a magazine swap, so if you have any old genealogical magazines you no longer want please bring them to the meetings.

Thank you to all of those who volunteered before and during the meeting to set up chairs and tables and those who stayed after to take it all down.

We had another great lunch at Claim Jumpers with some very interesting conversations regarding cemetery practices, obtaining information from cemeteries, and New York research.

Thank you all for helping to make the Alumni Association a success.

See you at the next meeting! And, please join us for lunch following the March Meeting.

Where To Find Forms

-- The Acquaintance Sheet has been sent by email to each member as a Pdf, along with a sample of how to fill out the form. You will need Acrobat Reader to open the file. This form is for people not yet identified as ancestors, but who appear on the deeds, wills, census, etc. with our ancestors. As Carol explained, they are often an alternate research source when you have hit a brick wall. If you did not receive the form, but would like a copy, please email Linda Palmer.
