Hello All!
The final count is 88 G&FH Alumni Association members! That is the total number of individuals that have expressed an interest in being part of the Association. I'm thrilled!
The party last Saturday was a lot of fun. It was great to see everyone and Lorraine gave a fabulous talk on Seattle 150. Several of you have sent me wonderful messages during the past week about the celebration. I wanted others to share in what was expressed. The following are a few of the comments made. Each paragraph came from a different person ...
Thank you for all your hard work planning the first G&FH alumni meeting and dinner. It was just great! You folks did such a wonderful job. All the work that you, Peri, Janice and other put into the planning really worked together to make the first meeting of the alumni association a very wonderful event for all of us who attended. The dinner was delicious and the program fascinating. (I have always LOVED hearing Lorraine speak... and was indeed lucky to have her as one of the G&FH instructors in ...)
Just a note to tell you how much I enjoyed the get together Saturday night. It was very well done - the Elks was a great place for an event like ours, the food was good, the company was great (especially after the 'ice breaker'), and the speaker was outstanding. My class wasn't fortunate enough to have had Lorraine teaching....how I wish we had. My husband, who has no interest in genealogy and felt that he had done more than his part by tromping through old cemeteries in New York this past September, was very pleasantly surprised by Lorraine's talk. I'd love to hear her again.
Luci -- you and your crew did such a wonderful, excellent program for all!! Thank you for doing that!
I really enjoyed the program last night, meeting you and Doug in person, hearing Lorraine's moving and fascinating talk, visiting Sarah and Jane Green and Edith Giles and Vernon Threlkeld and meeting folks new to me. Have a happy Thanksgiving and keep in touch!
1. Special Gift for Sarah Little!
At the celebration we (the Alumni) gave Sarah a special gift -- a G&FH Alumni scrap book. Many who attended the event either brought an item (pictures, verse, letters, etc) that were 'rubber cemented' into the book OR took pen in hand and wrote a few lines. Sarah loved it! I know that there may be others that would like to add their 'two cents' to the book. So, what I propose is that anyone that would like to add a page to the book, please send it to me at 2615 NW 5th St. #204 Seattle, WA 98107. Please mail them so I receive them by December 7th. I'll put them in Sarah's G&FH Scrap Book!
2. Alumni Directory
For those of you that came to the celebration you picked up a Alumni Directory which contained the following:
- A list of the Advisory Board members
- Directory of the 88 Alumni Association members
- a class list for each year; 1993-2001
- a list of 411 Surnames being researched by members
I have copies of the Directory for those that could not make the gathering, but to be honest no more funds to mail them out. I will bring them to the meetings and hope that you can pick one up there -- or you could send me a self addressed stamped 9x11 envelope and I'll mail it to you. (The directory is about 20 pages in length with a card stock cover.)
3. Potential Topics that could be covered at G&FH Alumni Gatherings
At the celebration many of you completed a survey on topics you would like to hear addressed at future meetings. We got back 36 surveys! I would like everyone to have a say, so I am attaching a copy of the survey (word document). If you have not yet, please look it over and send me an email with a list of the topics that would interest you. Please send me this email no later than Friday, November 30th.
4. Volunteers Needed!
At the celebration on Saturday I mentioned the need for folks to step up to the plate to volunteer or organize various aspects of the Association. So far the following folks have stepped up to the plate:
Web Page - Elaine Taylor, class of 1997 has volunteered to lead this effort. If you too are interested in this, let us know.
User Group on the internet/meeting format for special interests so ongoing dialogue, notification, communication would occur - Liz Davis, class of 1998. If others are also interested, please let us know.
Needing Someone to Step up ...
Random Acts of Kindness day -- there are 2000+ queries on King Co. Rootsweb if we set aside one 1st Sat we could do some research for people. Looking for an organizer.
Mentor System with the current G&FH students. Looking for an organizer.
Research Trip to Salt Lake City Looking for an organizer.
Guest Speakers - identifying guest speakers to address the Association at future meetings. We have an excellent list of ideas. Looking for an organizer.
Coordinate Submission of class projects to UW Special Collections - several members have indicated an interest in submitting their completed project to the US Special Collections. Looking for an organizer.
5. Our next meeting!
The official 1st meeting of the Association will be on Saturday, January 5th, 2001 at the National Archives on Sand Point Way. We will be meeting in the upstairs conference room from 10-12noon. The topic is TBD, but we'll email you with future details.
We do though have the conference room (at the Archives) for December 1st from 10-12noon. I would invite anyone to gather to help plan the first meeting, to discuss ideas you might have about the association, or to just meet to get to know each other. Please RSVP to let me know if you'll be joining us on Dec 1.
Well, I think that is all for now! Thanks to everyone for your participation.
